What Unusual Volume Tells You

Price says what happened; volume says how many people cared. Spikes in participation often precede — or explain — the next big move.

Volume Confirms Price

A breakout or breakdown on several times normal volume reflects broad participation, making the move harder to reverse. The same move on thin volume is far less trustworthy.

Check the 1-day change column: heavy volume with a flat price often means accumulation meeting distribution.

Delivery Separates Investors from Traders

High delivery percentage on a volume spike means shares are actually changing long-term hands — someone is building a position, not day-trading the headline.

Spikes with low delivery are usually speculation around news and fade just as fast.

Find the Reason

Every volume shocker has a cause: results, orders, block deals, index changes, or rumours. The list tells you where to look — the company page tells you whether the story holds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a volume shocker?
A volume shocker is a stock that suddenly trades at a multiple of its normal daily volume — on this page, at least 3 times its 20-day average. Unusual volume means unusual interest: something changed, whether news, results, a large investor entering, or speculation.
Why does high trading volume matter?
Price moves on thin volume are easy to reverse; moves backed by heavy volume reflect genuine buying or selling pressure from many participants. Volume is often called the fuel of a price move — a breakout on 5× normal volume carries far more weight than one on average volume.
What does delivery percentage tell you?
On the NSE, "delivery" means shares actually transferred to buyers' demat accounts rather than squared off the same day. A volume spike with high delivery (say above 60%) suggests investors are accumulating to hold; a spike with low delivery is mostly intraday trading and speculation.
How is this list calculated?
After every NSE close we compare each stock's traded volume with its own average over the previous 20 sessions, and list stocks at 3× or more. Delivery percentage comes from the exchange's daily delivery data for the same session.
